Advanced Yoga Poses
Advanced yoga poses like the forearm stand above are a challenging way to broaden your asana practice. Work against a wall, until you build your stabiity and stamina. Hands and forearms are on the floor at elbows width. Relax and look up slightly. Just like a handstand, stack the hips over the shoulders and lift one leg. Gradually engage the other leg and lift either straight up or add in a bend to tap the wall.
Advanced yoga poses include all the goodies that everyone wants to learn, or at least are interested in seeing what they look like. We love to fly, that is what so many yogis call the arm balances and inversions. The purpose for the arm balances is to add a dimension of challenge to your practice. These challenges provide the opportunity for presence to occur. A chance for the mind to find some rest from the incessant chattering and nervousness. Our true goal in yoga is to build presence and not frustration. Take them easily and enjoy exploring their dimensions, you will get it when you are ready.
The longer I practice yoga, the more gentle my preferences are becoming, the need to soften and surrender to the difficulty of a posture means more than actually doing it. It is a difficult perspective to grasp until it comes over you, give it time. Now my inversions and arm balances are easier and feel better than ever as I can relax and let the energy flow through my body, where before my tendency was to tense up to try to stay in the posture.

There are criteria that determine if a posture is advanced.
There are several categories of advanced poses that will be reviewed:
Standing, can be considered advanced due to the level of balance and coordination necessary to safely be the posture. Flexibility is another issue, as some postures bind the hand to the foot.
Seated, can be considered advanced if they require a lot of flexibility and experience to safely attempt.
Inversions can vary considerably and can be advanced when they require a lot of skill, strength and flexibility to achieve.
Arm Balances are advanced due to their reliance on finessing the body into a posture. Brute force and strength are not enough.
I'm adding in a few more this weekend, so keep checking back!
