Hand yoga: what the mudras look like and what they mean.
Hand yoga, or mudras are a complimentary form of yoga asanas. These mudras are not a replacement for medical treatment or advice. Their inclusion is primarily for a positive addition to a healthy lifestyle. According to Swami Ramdevji, Our bodies are composed of five elements like the earth. The five fingers of the body represent the five elements. The Thumb denotes fire, the index finger air, the middle finger space/sky, the ring finger Earth, and the little finger water.


Gyan or Dhyan Mudra
Touch the index finger and thumb together and straighten the remaining fingers.
Benefits: Concentration, increased attentiveness, reduces negative thoughts. With regular practice, yields sharp mindedness and increases memory power, great for children. Strengthens brain nerves, cures insomnia, headache and stress. Anger is destroyed. Perform prana mudra after this to achieve best results.

Vayu Mudra
Pull index finger toward palm, place tip of thumb on top to hold with slight pressure, straighten the remaining fingers.
Benefits: cures impurities of the blood circulation, benefits neck and spine. Consistent practice eliminates all wind related ailments like arthritis, joint pain, gout, vertigo, sciatica, knee pain and ceases gas formation.

Shunya Mudra
Draw middle finger back to palm, place tip of thumb on top to hold with slight pressure, straighten the remaining fingers.
Benefits: cures secretions from ears, ear pain, deafness and hearing problems if practiced for at least one h our a day. Cures heart problems, weakness in the bones, strengthens the gums, benefits throat and thyroid problems.
Do not do this mudra while walking and eating.

Prithvi Mudra
Join the tips of the thumb and ring finger together, remaining fingers remain straight.
Benefits: Consistent practice cures weakness of the body. Improves digestive powers, develops a positive attitude. Helps the body become fit and active. It is said to cure vitamin deficiencies.

Prana mudra
Join the tips of the little finger, the ring finger and thumb. Remaining fingers remain straight.
Benefits: Dormant energetic power of life is awakened. Develops health and activity in the body. Enhances the immunity, strengthens and rejuvenates the body. Along with dhyan mudra cures insomnia.
