The new recommendations closely reflect the the vegetarian food pyramid. Heavy reliance on whole grains, fruits and vegetables as a base of a healthy diet. The two differ substantially on one major level, as there are no meats listed. Alternate sources for protein come from beans, legumes and nuts.

Yoga and food have a strong connection because what we consume becomes part of us. Many yogis are vegetarian, 40% of vegetarians are vegans. The ancient Essenes were vegetarians and felt that consuming animal flesh meant that you also consumed their death. Our over-reliance on animal products contributes to our declining overall health. The vegan food pyramid is quite similar to the vegetarian one but it lacks the milk, cheese, egg, and honey. Vegans also have a sub-culture of raw foods. The raw food movement is catching momentum and a lack of reliance on grains, soy and sugars emphasizes a very heart healthy way of eating.Recommendations for calcium rich foods are given along the right. They are too small to read, so I will list them here: - 1/2 c fortified fruit juice or 5 figs
- 1 c cooked or 2 c raw Bok choy, collards, broccoli, Chinese cabbage, kale, mustard greens or okra.
- 1/c c fortified tomato juice
- 1/4 c almonds or soy nuts
- 1/2 c fortified soy milk or cooked soy beans
- 1/2 c tempeh or tofu
- 2 Tablespoons almond butter or sesame tahini
- 1 oz calcium fortified breakfast cereal
My concern with the recommendations for most vegan diets is a huge reliance on soy products. I personally can't consume more than two or three servings of soy a week, or else the bioestrogens wreak havoc with my body. I learned this the hard way. Be careful when trying any new diet where you add in a lot of one food type, it's best to seek out a balance of whole foods that are unprocessed.
